About Play Therapy

Play Therapy is a child led and non-talking therapy, this means that the child will not be quizzed or questioned about their life, although should a client choose to talk that is fine too.

The aim of Play Therapy is to allow the client a physical and emotional space in which to process their own inner most thoughts and feelings, using play and creative arts as the media. We can never know how much a child will need as we never know what will come up in session….so the duration of the intervention is also child led.

The client may choose to work with many different media aiding their healing process. Sand, puppets and masks, art and craft materials, stories and clay, den making, role play and music and water are some of the media proven to help children and young people who may have issues with: –

  • Autism Spectrum disorders
  • Anger/aggression/ tantrums/ violent behaviour
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Attachment & trauma
  • Bereavement & Grief
  • Difficulties with relationships (parents, siblings, peers, teachers)
  • Difficulties with concentration/ motivation
  • Disturbed sleep patterns
  • Eating disorders
  • Low self esteem
  • Phobia’s
  • School avoidance
  • Separation anxiety
  • Withdrawn behaviour
  • Wetting/ soiling/ smearing

… to name but a few

Play is a child’s natural medium of self-expression and the positive impact that Play Therapy has upon children is documented in the research collated by Play Therapy UK and available on their website, www.playtherapy.org.uk
